John Deere Crawler Dozers

John Deere was the man who was able to design and develop the world's first commercially successful self-cleaning or scouring steel plow, according to research. This was around the time when the settlement and the development of the Midwestern United States was taking place. It was they say the "Go West young man" period of time in America. The people of the 19th Century were considering the Midwest as being the golden land of much hope and promise. That was 170 years ago.

John Deere was thought they say, to be one of the people along with his company and its innovations who reflected the core values of integrity, commitment and quality of the country. When the famous steel plow was developed by John Deere in his blacksmith shop he started the beginnings of the Deere company. This company today does business with and supplies people and businesses around the world while employing more than fifty-thousand people.

Mr. Deere was born in Rutland, Vermont February 7, 1804 and was raised near Middlebury, Vermont. His father was lost at sea when he was four years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his five brothers and sisters all alone. He received the simpliest of education due to the situation. He left home with his mother's blessing at the age of seventeen, it is said. He became an apprentice to a properous blacksmith, a Captain Benjamin Lawrence. Captain Lawrence taught him how to be a blacksmith as well as becoming a surrogate father to John.

He eventually married, had children and then with tough times, decided to leave his family, four children and a pregnant wife to try to find a better paying job. During his time away from home he invented the steel plow and started a small business making and selling the plows. He sent for his family and found partners to help grow his business. He then moved the young company to Moline, Illinois. The company grew and the name John Deere became famous for manufacturing quality farm equipment.

His wife of thirty-eight years Demarius died at the age of sixty. He went back to Vermont and married Demarius' younger sister Lucenia. John Deere died in May of 1886 at the age of eighty-two. More than four thousand people came to the church to pay their respects. The town mourned they say for a long time with black curtains in their windows. His decendants went on to lead the John Deere company for the next seventy years.
